Extractions and Socket Grafting

Tooth extraction is a common dental procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jaw bone. This procedure is performed to get the patient out of pain and remove infectious bacteria from the bone. Without proper treatment, the infection may lead to painful swelling in the cheek or jaw bone, which can radiate to other parts of the body. As the oral cavity is very close in proximity to the brain and as well as the heart it is very important to remove infection as efficiently and rapidly as possible. There are several reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted, including:

  • Very large tooth decay

  • Infection

  • Tooth fractures

  • Impaction of a wisdom tooth that is causing pain

  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment, such as braces or aligners

  • Severe gum disease

Tooth extraction is typically performed under local anesthesia, which completely numbs the area around the tooth. In some cases, a sedative may also be used to help the patient relax.

After the tooth has been removed, we will place a dressing over the socket to help control bleeding and promote healing. Our office will provide you with post operative instructions on how to care for the extraction site and manage any pain or swelling.

In most cases, the extracted tooth can be replaced with a dental implant, bridge, or denture to restore chewing function and improve the appearance of the smile. We will discuss all of your replacement options with you, taking into consideration your needs and goals.

It is important to follow our instructions carefully after the extraction to promote proper healing and reduce the risk of complications. If the patient experiences persistent pain, bleeding, or swelling, they should contact us as soon as possible.
